First Quarter 2009 Overview

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/28/09 -- eHealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: EHTH), the leadingonline source of health insurance for individuals, families and smallbusinesses, today announced its financial results for the first quarterended March 31, 2009.

Gary Lauer, chief executive officer of eHealth, stated, "We are pleasedwith our first quarter performance and, especially, our submittedapplication growth. The economic environment during the first quartercontinued to be challenging, yet we saw more individuals, families andbusinesses coming to eHealth to find affordable, quality health insurance."

First Quarter Results

Revenue -- Revenue totaled $31.9 million for the first quarter of 2009, a21% increase compared to revenue of $26.3 million for the first quarter of2008.

Submitted Applications -- Submitted applications for individual and familyproducts increased 23% in the first quarter of 2009 to 141,200applications, compared to 114,500 applications in the first quarter of2008.

Membership -- Estimated membership at March 31, 2009 totaled 680,100members, a 22% increase over estimated membership of 558,200 at March 31,2008.

Operating Income -- Operating income increased 18% to $5.6 million for thefirst quarter of 2009, compared to operating income of $4.7 million for thefirst quarter of 2008. Operating margins were 18% in both the firstquarters of 2009 and 2008. Non-GAAP operating income increased 21% to $6.5million for the first quarter of 2009, compared to non-GAAP operatingincome of $5.4 million for the first quarter of 2008. Non-GAAP operatingmargins were 20% in both the first quarters of 2009 and 2008. Non-GAAPoperating income and margins in the first quarters of 2009 and 2008 exclude$941,000 and $659,000 of stock-based compensation expense, respectively.

Pre-tax Income -- Pre-tax income for the first quarter of 2009 was $6.0million, a 1% increase compared to pre-tax income of $5.9 million for thefirst quarter of 2008. Pre-tax income was unfavorably impacted in the firstquarter of 2009 from a decrease in interest income of $0.8 million comparedto the first quarter of 2008. Non-GAAP pre-tax income was $6.9 million forthe first quarter of 2009, a 5% increase compared to non-GAAP pre-taxincome of $6.6 million for the first quarter of 2008. Non-GAAP pre-taxincome in the first quarters of 2009 and 2008 exclude $941,000 and $659,000of stock-based compensation expense, respectively.

Net Income -- Net income for the first quarter of 2009 was $3.1 million, or$0.12 per diluted share. Net income for the first quarter of 2008 was $3.3million, or $0.13 per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income for the firstquarter of 2009 was $4.0 million, or $0.15 per diluted share, compared tonon-GAAP net income for the first quarter of 2008 of $3.8 million, or $0.15per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP net income per dilutedshare in the first quarter of 2009 exclude $941,000 of stock-basedcompensation expense, adjusted by $131,000 for a net estimated income taxbenefit related to stock-based compensation expense as well as additionaltax expense recorded during the period in accordance with SFAS No. 123(R).Non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP net income per diluted share in the firstquarter of 2008 exclude $659,000 ofstock-based compensation expense, adjusted by $154,000 for estimated incometax benefit related to stock-based compensation expense.

Cash Flow and Cash Balance -- Cash flow from operations for the firstquarter of 2009 was $4.7 million, compared to $5.8 million for the firstquarter of 2008, representing a decrease of 19%. In the first quarter of2008, a tax benefit of $2.4 million, primarily from the utilization of netoperating loss carryforwards, was included in cash flow from operations. Inthe first quarter of 2009, $1.7 million of tax benefit, primarily from theutilization of net operating loss carryforwards, is included in cash flowfrom operations and $1.2 million of net operating loss carryforwards, fromthe utilization of excess tax benefits related to share-based payments, isincluded in cash flows from financing activities. Cash, cash equivalentsand short-term marketable securities as of March 31, 2009 totaled $150.3million, compared to $150.6 million as of December 31, 2008. During thefourth quarter of 2008, our board of directors authorized a stockrepurchase program of up to $30 million, or ten percent of our outstandingcommon stock, whichever is less. We established a 10b5-1 trading plan andbegan repurchasing our outstanding common stock in late December 2008.During the quarter ended March 31, 2009, we repurchased in connection withthe stock repurchase program approximately 361,800 shares of our commonstock at an average cost of $12.70 per share including commissions, for atotal cost of $4.6 million.

2009 Guidance

eHealth is reiterating the following guidance for the full year endingDecember 31, 2009 based on information currently available:

--  Total revenue is expected to be in the range of $131 million to $136    million    --  Stock-based compensation expense is expected to be in the range of $5    million to $6 million    --  GAAP income tax rate expected to be in the range of 43% to 45%    --  GAAP net income per diluted share is expected to be in the range of    $0.51 to $0.61 per share
